I do agree, to a point. However I do like the share certain online tools I use or books my clients could benefit from to help them grow their business. I definitely don’t want my site to look like a race car but often in conversation I have mentioned services like Basecamp (for my or a book I have read to a client or someone I meet at a networking meeting and it’s been easy to tell them to just go to my web site and look for the link. I’m not looking to make huge amounts of money with these ads but it’s nice to get a little credit for sharing the information with others without going overboard.
Their is definitely a fine line between using “ads” and trying to look desperate and using them as a resource for current and potential clients. If you are going to use any ad or affiliate link or graphic I do suggest keeping it to a minimum of only those things you are most passionate about telling people about.
Remember the old saying, “penny wise, dollar foolish.”
Isn’t this the case when marketing or advertising anything, not just blogs? If you can leverage a strong brand to gain focused, strategic partnerships, that will always be more valuable than a random, shotgun approach to advertising.
Absolutely. That’s why I chose not to advertise on this blog. That may change someday, but I would only partner with companies I completely feel comfortable with. The term partnership truly applies here, I think. You nailed it. For me to partner with an advertiser would take 100% mutual alignment. 🙂
Great comment, Brian.
