What if 2012 were your last year, your last chance at leaving your mark or doing something great or crossing out every item on your bucket list?
This has nothing to do with the Mayan calendar or the financial crisis, mind you. It’s just a simple what if question.
What if you went another year without writing that book you’ve been thinking about for a decade? What if you went another year without taking that trip to Paris or Moscow or Sydney you’ve been dreaming about your whole life? What if you went another year waiting to launch your startup?
What if you only had 365 days left and that’s it?
Here’s what I’ve learned in the last few years: There’s no such thing as the right time. All we really ever have is now. Now is the right time. Tomorrow is bullshit. Tomorrow turns into next year and then someday and finally never. Tomorrow and next year will be too late. Whatever needs doing, do it now. Today.
Early in my career, I wasted years – precious years – doing what I was told, trying to fit in and often playing it safe when every instinct in my body told me not to. You have no idea how much I now regret having thrown those years away. I lost so much time waiting for opportunities and “the right time” to do something, it makes me ill just thinking about it. Never again.
So the lesson here is simply this: Ask her out. Book that flight. Graduate. Take the job. Write the damn book. Get your funding. Finish that triathlon. Launch your startup. Carpe Diem isn’t a slogan on a T-shirt. It isn’t an abstract philosophy. It means get off your ass and do the thing that needs doing. Today. If it fails, it fails. If it works, it works. So what? Either way, the sooner the better.
That’s it. You have 365 days. Show me what you’ve got.

my motto; Live today the best you can for tomorrow may never come – taped to my keyboard so I remember it daily… sometimes just seeing it makes me shut down the laptop and head to the beach, or for a walk or just simply outside for some some fresh air! I also don’t go to bed regretting whatever did not happen or get finished, helps me sleep more peacefully. Start fresh each day and do all you can to make it count!
…I’m so taping that to my keyboard, too! What a great reminder for us writers, who sometimes tend to reclusively hole up like the Unabomber while on deadline.
And yeah: I have 12 stories due by next Tuesday. And I’m wearing a hoodie.

Yep, this post resonates.
In my case, I lost valuable time because, well, without giving my memoirs away, there were some tough things that beat me down and I *let* them beat me down.
The interesting thing about such tidal changes in life is that even there, you experience good and bad. Awakening from a situation where you haven’t grabbed the bull by the horns is empowering, invigorating, refreshing…I compare it to what a butterfly must experience when first getting out of that narsty cocoon. However, there is also the realization that you could have gotten out of there any ole time. You have to get to a point where you realize it’s all part of the journey. And hopefully, people listen to your story so that they can learn that the easier way.
Don’t think of lost time as lost. Just think of it as the time you were sleeping, and now it’s time to be awake and kicking butt (as you do).

I did not push myself as hard as I could.
I did not ask for the business as much as I could have ( by colleagues observation)
I did not focus on PR for my business as much as I did giving others PR
I did not make room for a man to come into my life because I was “too busy to be bothered”
I did not drink as much water as I should have to be healthy and hydrated.
I pulled punches when they needed to hear some tough love.

I didn’t start writing my novel early enough (I could be done by now). I didn’t spend more time in Europe. I didn’t spend enough time with Trey Pennington. I didn’t buy my GoPro camera early enough in the year to enjoy it all summer like I should have.

Thanks! Books are always a bitch. The hardest thing in the world is to finish a book for some reason. People have no problem getting started or getting 2/3 stuck-in. It’s always that last 1/3 that somehow stalls and stalls and stalls.

Borrowing from a friend’s personal philosophy, you didn’t wake up this morning to NOT do something new.
I like that.
Years ago my wife and I had been putting off having a child. There was always a reason why it wasn’t the right time – new job, death in the family, illness, and so on.
One day as I was coming home from work after another typically mundane day it hit me that we were slowly chipping away at our opportunity to grow our family. I became suddenly fearful that we would get to a point in our lives where it was too late to have a child. It was what we really wanted and had wanted for some time but we let trivial considerations deter us from doing it.
When I got home, I walked in the door and when I saw my wife there standing in the kitchen, I said to her, “Let’s have a baby.”. A year later we brought our daughter Emma into the world.
Emma is now 4 years old and she is the most spirited person I have ever met. Every day is amazing with her in it. We are glad we took a leap of faith.

Books are hard to finish because…someone’s going to read them and dislike it! I’ve finished and published two of them (so far) and by the time you hit 2/3 all you can hear is a chorus of voices in your head saying what shit it is. That’s when you put on headphones and keep going.

This is a great post. I agree completely and I’m taking action.
I spent the last three years as a teacher in the Middle East, for the money, though I had no interest in teaching or the location!
So I left my cushy well paid job in the sun to move to rainy England and pursue my dream of being a writer through an unpaid internship! It’s a big risk, I’m using up my savings but I just thought ‘screw it, I’m 23, it’s time to start doing what I want before I have a mortgage and kids and a house with a white picket fence’!
I guess you really got tired of waiting for the right moment. You waited till you realized that the “right moment” that you were waiting for doesn’t really exist. It’s only in our head. It’s our own imagination that helps us believe that tomorrow could possibly be better, because there’s a good chance that the “right moment” might be tomorrow. Thank you for bursting the bubble. It’s about time we “Gryp Die Dag”(that’s Afrikaans, it means the same thing as “Carpe Diem”).

I completely agree that if anyone has a burning desire to achieve something then don’t put it off – go for it. At the same time, its important not to lose sight of the valuable things that often surround us in everyday life and which may get overlooked or taken for granted – the joys of good friends and family, and good health, for example. Much of our society pushes us towards having ambitious goals, which may be difficult to attain in practice. Self-fulfilment is often closer than we realise. Focus on what is positive about your world, chill out and enjoy.

Yesterday, I learned that one of my friends had died suddenly, unexpectedly, and it has really had me thinking about how “carpe diem” is more than just a latin saying. We never really have any idea how much time we have left, and although it is easy to put off things, there is no guarantee that we will have that opportunity later. Seize the moment, and make your dreams a reality today.

I am aware everyday of the time I spend doing things that are not on my list. A certain amount of that is just stuff… like time spent commuting to work I really love. Fortunately a big part of each day is on-task. Unfortunately it has taken me over 55 years to get to this point. That said, I am not sure that the wisdom which allows this awareness would have been accessible much earlier. I am grateful, every day, that it has arrived.

I pastor a church, so I am well aware of how short life is. I’ve buried friends, relatives, and total strangers of all ages, young and old. Tonight I will be speaking from the letter of Paul to the Philippians (3:13). The message will be the same as Paul’s: “forget the things which are behind, and reach forward to what lies ahead.” Too many of us are so focused on what we have not accomplished, that we forget that we still have a life ahead. The only thing is that none of us know how much time we have left.
About 14 years ago reality hit me like a brick to the head (and I have survived a few of those). Walking through a funeral home, I noticed a lone, little casket flanked by two wreaths of flowers (one from the parents, one from the grand parents). At that time one of my own little girls was that young (2 years). I was crushed. But the thought that came to mind that has stuck with me all these years is this: we will never live long enough. No matter how long we live, we will always wish we had more time to do what we haven’t done; that is, unless we have done them.

Thank you so much for this post. It is so easy to procrastinate about this and that, and I must admit that’s exactly what I’ve been guilty of myself. But I am determined that this year I am going to make serious progress and finish my big project – my science fiction novel for teenagers. I’ve already set up a blog with WordPress – you can find it by searching online for “our team on the planet Frondar” (I daren’t paste the link here and wouldn’t want to upset anyone!). My idea is to generate interest in the basic concept, so that when the novel is finished, I will have a following and be able to get interest from publishers. I’d like to wish everyone out there who is trying to get a project going the very best of luck – it’s tough going but we need to stick at it. Let’s get it together!

Sometimes, even those of us who have learned this need to hear it again from someone else, especially when you start putting things off because you think that to yourself that you must exercise patience. In some situations, it really is good to practice patience but in others maybe not so much, but that can be a hard call to make sometimes.
There are a couple things that I need to do this year. A big thing is to start finding a way to make a living out of that which I enjoy and am most passionate about. Right now, I’m faced with wanting to leave a place that I am not so passionate about and moving to try to pursue what I’m passionate about, though I don’t really have a clear picture or know how things will turn out if I choose to pursue what I’m passionate about. So, my dilemna is whether I should stay where I don’t want to be any longer or leave and try to pursue what I am passionate about.

Thanks so much for this! The love of my life just finished chemo on Friday and I can tell you that facing your mortality is a strange combination of dread and enlightenment. When your game face is stripped away and your soul is exposed, your love is tested and your strength is tested but you receive clarity which is a gift I wish for everyone to have. Yes! This is what its all about. It took me a long to time to learn that if you spend your whole life waiting for a perfect moment, its never going to come.
If you need extra motivation, I would recommend reading Drive by Daniel Pink. It helped me realize that I have to get out and start to work at the things I want.

this is plainly and simply brilliant…I had some posts on similar topic, but I end up going back to the tomorrows and next weeks of my life…many things have been left undone and it’s hard to track back…so people, go on as the man says, do it now!

Preach! I have learned this lesson so much this past year. I kept not living life because I was worried about how it would affect my made up time line. For example: “If I apply to grad school that will take 2-3 years, and then I’ll need a few years working before having kids, but then I’ll be older than I want to when we start a family, so I shouldn’t apply to grad school, but we can’t have babies unless I get a better job…..” So there I sat, doing nothing, anxiously watching the time slip by. So I started making plans for today and not years down the road. I applied to grad school and am starting classes next week. As far as starting a family goes, we’ll take it 1 day at a time. People have had kids in much worse circumstances than massive student debt, and juggling work and grad school, and have been fine. I will not let my own perceived timeline dictate my life and stop me from making decisions today. God is in control not me.
This was a great way to start my week. I think along the same paths but occasionally need a prod to get me going again. For that I thank you and wish you success in your 365 days, tomorrow may be to late

Love it, love it, love it. Today is the only day we have! I have started this year on a roll with words similar to the ones you wrote on not waiting another day to something and just getting it done now. It’s amazing how much we limit ourselves when we increase the level of difficulty of a task just in our minds. Our goals are to be broken down to achievable parts to the point where every day you wake up and accomplish another piece!

An hour to live? I might rob a bank or drive my car as fast as I can on mountain roads just to see how much excitement I can handle. That’s probably not a great idea.
